Markowe Przetwory. Out of love, naturally

Cucumbers prepared in different varieties, kompots (a sweet, non-alcoholic fruit beverage), juices, and many other delicacies. These are all part of Markowe Przetwory brand. Mariusz Śledź, together with his wife, put into jars anything they gather in their backyard. Their preserves became so popular at one point that they decided to start a business.

-We make fruit and vegetable preserves since 1983. First, we produced preserves for our own needs. Then, our products went to our family and friends. Today, our home-made preserved can also be bought – says Mariusz Śledź.

He adds: However, these are not large quantities. We produce just as much as we can.

There are plenty of goods growing in the backyard, as well as in the orchard. Number one is the cucumber, a product from which this part of Pomorskie (Nizina Walichnowska, Walichnowska Plain) is famous for. Mariusz Śledź uses no fertilizers nor chemical spraying.

Markowe Przetwory brand offers different kinds of cucumber preserves. Brine pickles of different varieties, pickles with curry, onions, dill pickles, and other, including honey pickles.

-It takes considerable amounts of time to prepare honey pickles. You have to harvest cucumbers, wash and peel them, remove cores. This is what I do. My wife, on the other hand, prepares brine, puts cucumbers in jars, and pasteurises them. Together, it takes about six hours to prepare twelve jars of cucumbers. Taking into consideration the fact that it is our side activity, something that stems out of passion, it takes up quite a lot of our time – says Mariusz Śledź.

Among the vegetable preserves, we will find red cabbage, carrots, green beans, or white cabbage. These make perfect lunch sidings, especially in winter.

The orchard is full of apples, pears, plums, black and red currant, raspberries, and others. Mariusz Śledź and his wife prepare mousses, juices, and other delicious preserves out of them. Pumpkin, on the other hand, is the main ingredient of meat seasoning.

Where can you find Mariusz Śledź and his preserves? Mainly on local fairs and markets, in Gniew or Tuchola Forest. Preserves can also be purchased via the Internet.
